1. Delhi

Delhi, the capital of India from 1947, is of great historical importance. Historical monuments are dotted all over the city. Delhi is the place where all the action during Republic Day and Independence Day happens. The main places worth visiting are

Red Fort

At the Red Fort, on 15th August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, unfurled the tricolor for the very first time. Till date tradition continues on every Independence Day. The massive enclosing walls of this historical fort give it its name. This is the largest monument in Delhi and is very popular among tourists. The light and sound show that air in the evenings give an insight into its great history.

India Gate

This iconic monument will definitely fill your chest with pride. This was built as a memorial to 70,000 soldiers who lost their lives in the World War I. This monument has the names of soldiers inscribed on it. This place is extremely popular with tourists and locals alike.

Raj Ghat

Raj Ghat is the symbol of homage paid to Mahatma Gandhi. A square platform on the banks of Yamuna, marks the area where he was cremated. It also is the memorial of other famous people like Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Chandra Shekhar.

2. Jallianwala Bagh

This is the place where probably the darkest chapter in Indian history was created. Here, thousands of innocent people were massacred by a British General and this place serves as a living testimony to it. The silent walls tell us the gory details with the bullet still engraved in them.

3. Cellular Jail, Port Blair

This memorial is an architectural wonder and it amazes and disturbs you at the same. The monument is enormous but the individual cells used to house the inmates are dark, cramped and dingy.  It is really touching to read the poem written by Veer Savarkar himself, on the walls of his prison cell. The prison is built in the form of seven wings and a tower at the center. However, only three out of the seven wings stand today. It’s hard to imagine that this place was once the most dreaded place in India.

4. Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad

Sabarmati Ashram is a silent witness to many tremors that shook the British Empire. It was from here that Gandhi let the Dandi March. This ashram situated on the banks of Sabarmati River, was a residence to Gandhi for 12 years and his personal quarters “Hriday Kunj” has been converted to a  museum that houses several of his memorials. This ashram is open for tourists from 0800 to 1900 and with prior appointment a 90 minute guided tour can also be arranged.

5. Aga Khan Palace, Pune

This historical place is where Sarojni Naidu, Kasturba Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi and his secretary Mahadev Desai were imprisoned following the Quit India Movement. Later on, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai also breathed their last here during their captivity. It also houses a memorial for Gandhi where his ashes are placed.  This place is open from 0900 to 1800 for tourists.
