National Rail Museum


This 10 acre area houses all the information you need to know about Indian Railways. There are static as well as working train models. The Toy Train Ride is the main attraction here for kids and adults alike. The museum houses mini models all the different types of trains along with the signalling system and other railway memorabilia and photographs. There are over 100 real size train models showing the different types of trains on different gauges and terrains. It is a must visit for kids as well as for train enthusiasts.

National Science Center


Want to get your child interested in science? Then The National Science Center is the place for it. This huge complex covers topics like Information Revolution, Human Biology, Pre-Historic Era, Ancient and Emerging Science and talks about water conservation and lives of eminent scientists also. Along with this there is a very interesting working science model and an amphitheater that has shows on astronomy. Whatever be the age of the child there is always something that will satisfy his/her curiosity.

Red Fort


Every year on Independence day the kids watch this iconic monument on T.V. as the Prime Minister hoists the tricolor here. So why not show them this place in person. This place is perfect for a full day outing. There is so much to see here that one full day can easily be spent here. The huge fort comprises of the fort walls, Chatta Bazaar, Diwan-e-Aam and Diwan-e-Khaas, Hamam, Mosque, Rani Mahal among other structures.

Apart from the fort, there are newly constructed museum buildings that are dedicated to different periods of the freedom struggle each. These museums are very well maintained and very informative. Make sure you do not miss them.

Jantar Mantar


These unique structures were built by Maharaj Savaii Jai Singh II between 1724 to 1730. These five structures are basically astronomical observatories. It also features the worlds largest Sun Dial. This place comes under the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The structures were built for observing astronomical positions and calculations. It is an intriguing place and will surely interest the kids in astronomy.

Children’s Park and India Gate


India Gate, the iconic monument, built as a memorial for the Indian soldiers who fought in the World War I is a great place for kids. The added advantage is the 10 acre Children’s Park which has many activities for kids like boating, play area and an amphitheater. This place is brimming with people all year round. Winter afternoons are perfect to soak up some sun here.

Shankar’s Doll Museum


Started by the Political Cartoonist K. Shankar Pillai, Shankar’s Doll Museum is another interesting place. There are dolls from every country and are very mesmerizing to look at. The museum is divided into two sections one houses dolls from European countries and the other exhibits dolls from Asian countries. There are about 150 dolls depicting the ethnicity of India via different costumes and way of living.

Qutub Minar


This is another landmark of Delhi. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is perfect for a days outing with kids. Construction of this 73 meter high tower was started by Qutab-Ud-Din Aibak in the year 1192. Even today it stands as a testament to the changes that took place in Delhi. The iconic tower is not only picturesque but there is so much history attached to it that it will be a great history lesson for the kids.

Rashtrapati Bhavan


Rashtrapati Bhavan or the Presidential Palace and office is undoubtedly the best built structure in Delhi. The majestic palace covers an area of 5 acres on a 330 acre estate. Rashtrapati Bhavan is now open for public and the reservations for which can be done online from their site only. The area for tourists is divided into 3 circuits. In the months of February and March the Mughal Gardens is opened to the public free of cost. On Saturdays and Sundays you can also attend the Change of Guards Ceremony that takes place in the morning and evening.

Delhi Zoo and Purana Qilla


Delhi Zoo is one of the best in the country. From predatory cats to Sloth bears to different species of birds, this zoo has it all. The zoo is well maintained and it not only houses the animals but also serves as a breeding ground for them. Food is not allowed inside but there is a cafeteria inside. There is even a tram inside that takes you to all the exhibits. It is a faster and easier way to cover the entire park. But if you want to see everything closer and at your speed then walking is a better option. The zoo is too crowded on public holidays so its better if you go here on a weekday. Purana Qila or Old Fort built by Sher Shah Suri is right next to the zoo. It’s very popular for its boating and the Light and Sound Show.

Nehru Planetarium


Situated in the premises of the Teen Murti Bhavan was initially the private residence of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. The planetarium conducts 4 shows daily. Two in English and Hindi each on different topics related to astronomy. It is very insightful and a good way to develop an interest of astronomy in kids. The museum is also very detailed and informative. The added attraction is the Nehru Residence and Museum where the kids get to know more about their beloved Chacha Nehru.

  1. I’ve yet to visit India, so this is a good list for me as well as for those with kids! India Gate looks fascinating and is an impressive structure. I’d also like to visit Qutub Minar; I’ve only seen photos of this, and I’m sure it’s more striking in person!

  2. I haven’t been in New Delhi yet although I have been in India before. I visited Mumbai and Pune. Upon seeing this article,I’m more enticed to visit the National Science Center. The National Railway Museum also looks amazing. Worth visiting for sure!

  3. This is amazing! I haven’t made it to New Delhi yet, but my husband and I want to take my son there! It looks and sounds amazing! It’s great to know there are so many gteat things to do with kids, as we will likely be bringing our kid(s) with us when we go! What an amazing place to teach out son about history!

  4. I’m not one for museums, so in New Delhi I would spend more time exploring the city and admiring the unique architecture. I do think that Jantar Mantar would be very interesting. This intersects my love for architecture and space! I would also love to visit Qutab Minar,, which looks so beautiful and unique!

  5. I enjoyed learning what to see in New Delhi when traveling with children. Even though my children are grown, these attractions are very appealing to me! I especially love the look of the Red Fort, and would love to see the world’s largest sun dial at Jantar Mantar. Plus, I love the cultural diversity represented in the Doll Museum. I guess some of us never really grow up…thanks for these great suggestions!

  6. What a great list of places to see with kids in Delhi. I love seeing train museums, so I’m glad to see it on the list. I’m also a fan of planetariums and kids can relate to what they learn in school. The historical places are important for kids to see that they’re real places.

  9. It is very nice to see that there so many places to see in Delhi with kids. It seems very interesting to check these two historical places like Red Fort and also the Purana Qila with kids. They will surely marvel at those historical structures.
