The once in a blue moon phenomenon is finally here and Munnar has turned dreamy blue again. Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes Kunthiana) a flower that blooms only once in 12 years is all set to bloom this year. These purplish blue flowers cover the slopes and ravines of Munnar into a visual extravaganza. Munnar will be covered in a blanket of blue.
Neelakurinji, a shrub with bell shaped flowers grows abundantly in the southern region of the Western Ghats. In fact, the Nilgiri range got its name Blue Mountain due to these flowers. The flowering cycle of this shrub is once in every 12 years. Incidentally, the flowering cycle of Neelakurinji, in Munnar is 4 years ahead of the other parts so only Munnar will be covered in blue this year. The massive blooming season of Neelakurinji flowers starts from July to November 2018 in Munnar.
Thousands of tourists, nature enthusiasts as well as biologists will flock to Munnar to witness the blossoming of kurinji. When it last bloomed in 2006, it was reported that nearly lac visitors reached this Eco sensitive region within a span of three months. Its better to book tickets to Eravikulam National Park through e-booking here so that you can avoid the queue at the entrance of the park.
Eravikulam National Park is of the main tourists attractions in Munnar. Its spread over 97 sq km and is home to a range of rare animals and birds. The most important of them is the endangered and protected Nilgiri Thar. This national park holds the largest population of the Nilgiri Thar. The best time to visit is now when the hills are covered in blue from the blooming of the Neelakurinji flowers.
Echo point and Top Station is where you can get a breathtaking view of the Neelakurinji in its full glory. The view of the serene lake from there makes it even more scenic.
Make sure you mark these months and pack your bags to to Munnar to witness this beautiful gift of nature.
This is a Eco sensitive region. The Neelakurinji flowers can grow naturally only in limited high altitude regions and the best we can do is observe this gift of nature without plucking or harming them.
