Pride of Pune – Shreemant-Dagdusheth-Halwai-Ganapati

Ganesh Chaturthi, falls on the fourth day of the second fortnight in the month of Bhaadrapada of the Hindu calendar. It normally lasts for 10 days and is celebrated in honour of Lord Ganeshas Birthday.

Riddhi Siddhi Ganapati

This festival is celebrated by devotees by installing Ganesh idols at home or in pandals.

My Family Ganapati

Its believed that Ganesh Chaturthi was first celebrated publicly during the era of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to promote culture and nationalism.

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj- the pioneer of Ganesh Chaturthi

It was then revived many years later by Lokmanya Tilak to bring like minded people of different caste together; to generate a sense of unity and to encourage communal harmony against the colonial British Raj.

The festival ends on the 10th day. Huge procession are carried out with huge gatherings and the atmosphere of the place is truly electric.

The immersion procession

The idols are immersed amidst chants of

Ganpati bappa morya pudhchya varshi lavkar ya.

We pray to you and request you to come again next year with lots of blessings and love.

Once again we bid a tearful goodbye to our Lord who sets off on his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of his devotees.

About Pooja Samtani

Hi! I am Pooja. My life is an amalgamation of mundane and that of a digital nomad. The travel bug actually hit me after I completed my education and started earning. It was then I actually started experiencing places than just visiting them. Thus started a zeal to explore to satisfy my wanderlust. After marriage things just worked out better for me thanks to my equally zealous Hubby. Accompanied by our daughter who is ever ready to get out of home, we often set sails on many interesting (and sometimes crazy) family adventures with dreams to travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us. 1. Jai Sri Ganesh! Lord Ganesha was my favorite God when I was in 6th standard. I remember praying to him for a brilliant school record and marks. Thanks so much Pooja for sharing this lovely description of Sri Ganesh Chaturthi…

I would recommend the readers of this page to also check Sri Devdutt Pattanaik books for a deeper understanding of Indian Spiritual traditions.

    Thanks again
