Travel Itinerary for Bali Family Holidays

Bali “the island of Gods” is the most popular budget holiday destination in Indonesia. Although there are other equally enchanting places in Indonesia such as Lombok, Flores, Sulawasi, Yogyakarta and the famous Komodo National Park, but the cost of air travel to these remote areas for a family of lets say three can easily put a hole in your budget. Considering this, we are sharing our personal travel itinerary for Bali Family holidays with our kid. It is basically a mix of famous temples, beaches, volcanoes, cultural dance performances, party, rice terraces, marine park & a coffee plantation to give you the best of what Bali has to offer. You can choose to use it as it is or modify it to suit your requirements. Currency Exchange

Be wary of local money exchangers that are present all over Bali. Always go to an authorized money exchanger.  The local ones might claim to give you a better rate than the authorized ones but many are also good at fleecing you away. You can do so at any one of Bali’s reputed Banks or just remove cash at the ATMs. Hotels can do it too but their rate is always lower as usual.

Currency Indian Rupee 1 (INR) is about Indonesian Rupiah 209.65 (IDR)

Visa Fee

About 140 Nationals do not need a Visa when entering Bali for a stay of max 30 days. Since India is one of them, you can save on Visa fees. However you do need a passport with at least 6 months validity which is stamped for 30 days visa exemption upon entry.

Air Fare

This will be the biggest part of your budget allocation. Denpasar the capital of Bali is well-connected to all major cities of the world via its Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). The low cost airlines catering to Bali from India are Air Asia, Malindo Air and Garuda-Indonesia. We found that Air Asia offers the cheapest fares without meals and baggage. Other airlines which operate to Bali from India are Jet Airways, Singapore Airlines and Air India.

Pro Tip 1: You should plan early and book the flights first but not later than 8 weeks before the flight departure date although we booked our flights during an Air Asia flash sale some 8 months prior the flight departure date. Everything else such as airport transfers, hotel bookings, car rentals, sightseeing options, etc. can be taken care of later once the flights are booked.

These low cost airlines however have an additional charge for the cabin baggage which needs to be booked after you  finalize the flights. However, you have the option to book the baggage for any one passenger only. So basically you need to estimate the baggage required for the trip and pay only for what you need to carry.

Pro Tip 2: You should keep a lookout for flash sales and book your return airfare to Bali as soon as you get it under INR 20,000 per person from Delhi, including excess baggage. To keep it cost effective, try choosing flights which have a lay over (Kuala Lumpur for Air Asia & Malindo) and a total duration of between 10 to 12 hours. Also, it is possible that in the absence of flash sales, the flights with a layover may be available for around INR 22000 per person.

Direct flights to Bali are presently operated by Garuda-Indonesia only and that too only from Mumbai. Although it is faster (about 7h 35m) however they are costlier at around INR 28000-30000 per person.

Stay

There are plenty of online travel aggregators to search for your stay as per your budget. You can choose from a variety of accommodation such as hotels, resorts, boutique hotels, rental apartments, homestays, bed & breakfasts, guesthouses however, the Balinese Villa completely stands out from the rest. A good Balinese villa with a private swimming pool in Seminyak will cost you around INR 5000 per night and a good 4 star hotel will cost you around INR 4000 per night. Prices of hotels in Kuta are cheaper so some days could be split there to reduce the cost. Booking early also helps you to get better deals. Hotels & Resorts in Nusa Dua are pricey since they are premium beach front properties.

On an average, you can expect to spend about INR 5,000 per day on a good family accommodation.

Check out the prices of hotels at Bali here.

Local Commute

Taxi is the most convenient way to travel in Bali. You can hire one easily for a full day and get on with the sight seeing as per your convenience. A full day car charter will cost you about INR 2,200 per day.

Airport transfers to Ubud will cost you about INR 1,100 and to Nusa Dua / Seminyak / Kuta about INR 900.

If in Seminyak or Kuta area, you can easily hire a Bluebird taksi (read taxi) for local commute.

Pro Tip: There are a lot of blue coloured taxis running in Seminyak / Kuta area which are neither as reputable as the bluebird taksis nor are clean in their dealings. Best to avoid them.

Food

While booking hotels either directly or via any online travel aggregators, you should check that the breakfast for all family members including the kid(s) is included in the package. There are occasions when this is not the case. Local Indonesian cuisine available at street-side noodle & snack corners or Warung are not expensive and a great way to experience a new country. However, not all are comfortable with the flavours.

There are a few Indian restaurants available however they are pricey. It can easily cost you about INR 2000 – 2500 for a couple and a kid. You can expect to spend the same amount at other high end restaurants too.

On an average, you should keep aside INR 1,500 per meal for food for a family of 2 adults and a kid.

Best Time to Visit Bali

The tourist season starts right after the wet season ends so its pretty crowded from May to September. The best time to visit is just before the peak season in end of April or after the peak season in early October to avoid the heavy influx of tourists. The hotels are also reasonably priced during this period.
